For the backspace, try using ^H ( Ie hold down the control key and then
typing the h key). This is the standard until the baleful influence of the
Ancient Dec VT100 keyboard finally overcame all. Now most distributions use
^? as the backspace key, but some programs still use ^H.

The cursor keys are/maybe another issue.

anything. If I ssh into the same server with cygwin's openssh client,
everything works fine. What do I need to set in putty to get it to
recognize the backspace key correctly. BTW if I launch an xterm,
backspace works fine.
