This is goood !!!! Thanks David !!!
There are quite many servers listed here that I didn't knew about
before. Giving many goodies beyond port mapping.
a chance to play around with the unix/linux command line and a few utilities.
Because they mostly use OpenSSH and the default setup allows for port
forwarding, you can use also use these services to encrypt connections (but only
from you to that host, NOT the endpoint site your surfing to). Like other guys
have said, you can also set this up on a home machine and do the same thing,
although with electricity prices going up...
I've used these, and a few others along the way...I have personally tried a few of these, and I like metawire.org and although I
don't know if all of these sites allow port forwarding with ssh, the default
config is usually to allow it, so usually in practice sites do allow it.
I believe you must have been using some these for quite a while. Any
recommendation on which one is more reliable (least down time) and one
that will live long enough till I am alive. :)
Metawire runs OpenBSD, which in itself is very reliable (and secure), but they
have had to change ISP's a few times, so they do go down once in a while.
Rootshell.de runs linux and they have seemed good, never losing data, although
the connection seems slow (I don't know if it's on my end or theirs though...)
Bottom line, if you want to go this route, check out their sites, sign up with
2-3 of them, see whats the fastest (when you reroute connections theres always a
little extra lag) and go from there. Because they are free sites, don't expect
100% uptime - most commercial sites can't even manage that.
Also, don't use them for a backup space for files, unless they are really small
files, encrypted, and backed-up in some other location. For a page on the
actual port forwarding with putty, check this out:

I used to use some server by name xharddrive or xhomedrive -- but the.
company couldn't survive the post 2K web meltdown -- and one fine day
they shutdown without any notice.
As always, do not do anything at work that would allow you to get into
trouble!!! Good luck,
~David~
