I don't have enough RAM on my laptop, so I tend to not run X. I finally
mainly switched from putty to rxvt/openssh for one major reason: Every
time I run putty, it does something to putty.rnd that confuses the
"synchronize folders" bit in windows. I keep my home dir synced with a
server periodically. After running putty, it declares that the file has
changed on both sides (when of course it hasn't). Openssh doesn't
trigger this annoyance.

Oh, the bare cygwin shell (dos window) is awful. If I weren't running
the rxvt window, I wouldn't consider it. An xterm is even better, but
takes more resources if you don't otherwise need X.
