For that, I tend to use Putty. It's a better terminal emulator than the bare
Cygwin one. But yes, for having the X applications display locally, I find
it very handy to have an X server running.

That seems completely reasonable, but I've had some difficulties with the
terminal emulation in bare Cygwin shell prompts. I find the xterm terminal
emulation to be generally superior.
