    Okay, so it's not a DNS issue.

    There is a routing problem somewhere.

    Can you ssh from your linux box to teh university server? You say you
    can use putty on teh other XP box to the server with teh main
    connection.

    I'd double check your firewall software on your XP box. for tcp port
    22 (which ssh uses) specifically. I'd also check your home network
    for any strange routing settings that might have inadvertently been
    set that are preventing ping and tracert from connecting. Your issue
    is a networking problem with your XP box, and nothing that appears
    specificic to ssh.
