Hm, yes to valid passwords. (but trying to do password-less)

no to /home permissions, the old ones I'm using are sgid:

adm1amlp@15:20:09 $ cd /home
adm1amlp@15:21:23 $ ls -la

drwxrwsr-x 17 spsy spec 7168 Jan 20 15:16 spsy
drwxr-xr-x 4 thomson spec 512 Jan 20 15:18 thomson

thomson is a new account that ssh behaves as expected.
spsy is an old account that refuses to do the passwordless handshaking.
