And what were those steps? They are evidently *not* "all of the steps
necessary." :)

You are using an absolutely ancient version of SSH -- I suggest you
upgrade to OpenSSH and protocol 2 immediately, if feasible.

In any event, depending on the version, your software finds the agent
socket by way of the environment variable SSH_AUTHENTICATION_SOCKET or
SSH_AUTH_SOCKET; is it set?
