Detecting failed port forwarding

Hi,
is it possible (in OpenSSH) to detect a failed port forwarding
(e.g. -D 1234 was specified on the ssh command line but another
application is already listening on that port) other than by
parsing stderr? My favourite solution would be to have ssh
exit with a non-zero return value in this case.
