Try zlib 1.1.4, that is known to work (on my 4.3.3 box anyway :-).
xlc worked last time I tried it, but I no longer have access to it.
If you're going to use gcc, don't use the gcc-2.9x from the AIX toolbox
CD, I have some suspicions about it.
