I've narrowed it down further - my AIX 5.1 w/ML5 machines that do NOT
use NIS also work. So the latest update is:

AIX 4.3.3 w/ML11, AFS/NIS - WORKS
AIX 5.1 w/ML5, AFS - WORKS
AIX 5.1 w/ML5, AFS/NIS - DOESN'T WORK
