I would have expected DISPLAY=hostname:xx.x not localhost. But
maybe that is the hostname which I would say is wrong for a computer
on a network.

Maybe running xclock without the & so you can see the error message
might help.

Maybe target host does not have something like
sshd sshd1 sshd2 : ALL : ALLOW
in /etc/hosts.allow
But then again, we are playing 20 questions here. Why not
supprise us by showing error messages from the logs, debug
information from ssh and indicate distro/version on each end of the
connection.
