Can't access server from user console

I have had no trouble using SSH client from root account using console
login (no X forwarding). When I try to access a server from a user
account, I get crashes with requests for DISPLAY variable, error
messages that I have no controlling tty--indicating to me that the
server is responding as if I had specified X-fowarding, which I did
not. I am only interested in text interaction from a term--no X
session. Thanks for any suggestions. unetter@fastmail.fm
