I don't use sftp, I only use ssh, but I think it's very similar.
Regarding your first post, you obviously took a look at the man page of ssh. And
that's the solution to your problem: Generate a public/private key with
ssh-keygen or puttygen. Append the public key to the ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file
on the ssh-server. Make sure that the rights for ~/.ssh and authorized_keys are
600. Use sftp -i path_to_private_key and everworks fine.
