Newbie chmod question

Hi - my host has advised that I can chmod my files through putty and
given me my login info. I'm all logged in fine, but where to go from
there? I've tried finding my htdocs directory using the ls function,
but it doesn't seem to recognised it. I will be greatly indebted to
anyone soend 2 minutes pointing me in the right direction! Catherine
