I could imagine a telent server (telnetd) for win/98 but I'm not sure
what kind of status I could check. All the tools I'm aware of are
gui-based.
If you've got enough ram, CPU, bandwidth, and patience, try VNC remote
control (http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/download.html) and do GUI
remote control. I just checked, there's a 9X version although I
didn't look to see if they provide a server side for it.
