The second case is basically what you are asking for. You will be forever
running another program to listen to the port.

Not wanting a shell hanging around I can understand. It took some searching
since I forgot the name, but you might want to check out Tunnelier (
http://www.bitvise.com/tunnelier.html ) which will let you open a tunnel
without having the shell open on your desktop.
