My opinion, not a comp techno, but an educational user..

 We prefer ssh - mainly because its easier to use chroot-ed. (Yes I'm aware
 of the arguements over whether its really 'safe', and yup, I'm aware there
 are patches for openssh to achieve this, but this is simpler, and that's
 impt for us)
 The switch to ssh came as soon as they introduced PAM support

 However, we may need to review our use of ssh - IIUC they have changed
 their educational policies [was free for edu use] - I need to investigate
 this. Also, we see advantages with this new PAM Winbind, and we can only
 get this to work with openssh in testing.

 So, swings and roundabouts...not un typical in technology..
