ftp is only insecure in a system which is insecure, i.e., if the system
doesn't care about cleartext logins via telnet then you'll probably find no
protection for ftp. and it may be that some o/s' (or distributions of
same), most notably linux, have long failed to provide for secure
solutions, but this does not mean that all have these flaws. kerberized
systems have provided a secured method whereby client and server can
operate for over a decade. and the ssl crazy hasn't left ftp (or telnet or
r*) un-touched, there are many ftp servers and clients available which make
use of ssl/tls to secure the command and/or data channels.
