transfer of Swedish characters

I don't know if this is an ssh-configuration problem, or
if the problem lies elsewhere. I would be glad for any information.

I use a RedHat 8.0 installation of Linux, and use ssh to log
onto a Solaris system (which only has ssh1).

The problem is that swedish characters едц don't turn out
all right, they are displayed as ?

If this is an ssh-configuration problem, any comments
on how to fix it would be much appreciated, or else any information on
where to look for its solution.
