SSH 3.4 Hanging Connections

After compiling and installing OpenSSH3.4 on my RH7.1
machine today, I encountered a behavior I haven't met
before.
I am running some scripts which connect to the machine
over and over. After some time I discovered lots of
zombie process on the SSH client machine, and lots
of established connections on the server.
After booting the client, the server still showed
the connections, even after I waited for quite some
time.

Any ideas on why this happened or how I can avoid it ?
