I had a similar problem. Turned out that the 3.4p1 install was careful
to notice that I had a pre-existing sshd_config file, and preserved it.
Unfortunately, something in the config file was incompatable with the
new software (I think my HostKey line pointed to an old-style key file,
so the SSH2 key couldn't be found).

I just deleted all my old config files (saved them someplace, of
course), and let the install script create new ones for me. Worked like
a champ after that.
