yes, we know that; if you had read the group for a while before posting or
the group's faq you would know that too. actually it can work, but only
the command channel will be protected, which is sufficient to protect your
authentication credentials and filesystem details but not enough to protect
the data, which might be a significant issue for you -- all of which is
explained in the faq.
use sftp or scp.
if those aren't possible does the ftp server support ssl, tls or kerberos?
if so use an ssl/tls enabled or kerberized ftp client, e.g., kermit.
