Well, it requires encryption/decryption in real time, so yeah, it could slow
things down if you don't have spare cycles to do it.
Me, for big stuff, I tend to put big encrypted tarballs up publicly, SSH in,
grab them with wget, then decrypt them with keys transmitted only via SSH.
