copy the key between machines vs client adding it for you

In my web searches for ssh info, I've seen various comments regarding
manually copying (scp) key files over to server/client systems and
tacking it on the end of the existing file.
Is this the same string that gets copied to my known_hosts files by
my clients? I'm referring to the typical dialog "this host's key is
not in your list of known hosts, do you want to add it" when you
first connect to a host you've never connected to. You also get it
when you just installed a new ssh client.
When i say YES, I am never asked to add the key again. Is this action
doing the same thing as tacking on the key files manually or have I
been using SSH with a missing a level of authentication for several
years?
thanks
