You would probably be better off with something like timbuktu or
    PC-anywhere.

You can use an ssh server as a gateway to do ssh port forwarding and
have a solution that is actually faster than without ssh in the picture,
and gives you full GUI control over the porkchop (==PC). This solution
is very stable on solaris and linux with tb2 and avoids the rather dodgy
encryption more or less built in to pc control programs.

One additional hidden advantage is that the ssh gateway can (and should)
also be used as a firewall and packet filter, if you want to control
stuff over the internet. Another is that a dedicated gateway machine can
be secured against ordinary users so they can't mess with it.

I don't know of any of the cheapo 'hardware' firewalls that implements
an ssh server so this route is probably out.

There was someone messing around with a native windows implementation of
openssh but I don't know what happened with it (and could care less
frankly). The ssh vendors like f-secure will take your money for an ssh
server for NT and 2000 but not 98, thus demonstrating reasonably good
    judgement.
