shooting the host sounds like a great idea.... but in this case it turns
out that the situation was corrected by UNCHECKING the "use scp2"
option. I had dropped back to try pscp.exe and copies worked from the
command line, so I tried WinSCP v1.0, and that worked too. WinSCP v2.0
wouldn't work until I found that the shell option "use scp2 with scp1
compatibility" was the problem.
all is well now.... thought I'd document in case anyone has a similar
issue and searchs the group.
