ssh (sometimes) refused from subnet

Not sure whether this is an ssh issue or my network is misconfigured,
but it only manifests with ssh, so here goes.

I have a client on a subnet (internal ip: 192.168.5.100, gateway is
FreeBSD using natd/ipfw) trying to ssh (using password) to several
external machines, and failing on certain ones. All involved machines
are FreeBSD or variants. This is the only client on the subnet. I
have no problems connect to anything if I connect from the gateway
machine, and I haven't had problems with any other protocols.

ie.
> ssh -v me@server3.com
