SSL is the protocol which is not limited to http but is also used for
other communication protocols such as LDAP, TN3270, FTP, etc. HTTPS is
SSL over HTTP, the actual implementation of the SSL protocol for HTTP.
It includes things like the port number used for SSL sessions (by
default 443), the fact that the client recognizes the need for an SSL
session via the https:// prefix, and the inability of the server to
direct the client to start the SSL session negotiation.
