I keep free of them by using a Mac :-)
But my wife uses a Win XP box, and although a few things sneak through
now and then, she has nothing like you describe. One difference might
be that she uses Firefox rather than IE whenever possible (everywhere
but our stupid bank, but they don't give us spyware - at least not yet!)
