I don't know about "used to happen", but -generally- speaking,
it is more secure to display a fixed number of mark characters than
a number that varies with the actual key length. If one displays
a number corresponding to the key length, then even without
having revealed any byte of the key, one has noticably cut down on
the search space -- no point in searching anything that does not
match that particular length.
