               unauthorized privileges on HP-UX

NOTICE:
There are no restrictions for distribution of this Bulletin
provided that it remains complete and intact.

The information in this Security bulletin should be acted upon
as soon as possible.

INITIAL RELEASE:
01 December 2004

POTENTIAL SECURITY IMPACT:
Potential local increase in privileges, Denial of Service (DoS),
unauthorized access to files and web pages.

REFERENCES:

VULNERABILITY SUMMARY:
Potential vulnerabilities have been identified with the Java
Plug-In on HP-UX which may allow untrusted applets to escalate
privileges and incorrectly allow loading of non-code resources.

SUPPORTED SOFTWARE VERSIONS*: ONLY impacted versions are listed.
Java JPI on:
all 1.4.2 releases through 1.4.2.05,
all 1.3.1 releases through 1.3.1.13.

BACKGROUND:
Two potential vulnerabilities in the Java(TM) Plug-in may
separately allow an untrusted applet to escalate privileges
through JavaScript to Java communication.

A third potential vulnerability in the Java Plug-in may allow
an untrusted applet to inappropriately interfere with another
applet in the same web page including causing it to incorrectly
load non-code resources such as files and web pages.

There are no reported attacks based on these vulnerabilities.

AFFECTED VERSIONS

Note: To determine if a system has an affected version,
search the output of "swlist -a revision -l fileset"
for an affected fileset. Then determine if the
recommended patch or update is installed.
