That's an over-generalization. Some advertisers pay per impression, some per
click-through, some per sale, and there are other variations as well.

In a way, this is already happening. More and more sites now require
visitors to register, e.g. to receive email advertisements, before access is
allowed. I would usually prefer watching ads, but I can understand that the
proliferation of ad blocking software is forcing webmasters to reconsider
the viability of banner advertising.

No, that's close to a strawman argument. What I am saying that you should
either play along politely, or go elsewhere. Someone offers you content you
want, for free, and only asks in return that you look at their ads.
