norton antivirus slowing down system BIG TIME! help!

    Norton Antivirus 2004 seems to be checking every file on my system,
    all the time! And it's damn slow! I had 2002 previously, and just kept
    getting updates. It didn't check files all the time though, only when
    I was opening stuff. This new version seems to check every file every
    time I open a window in Explorer or a page on IE. What settings can I
    change to speed up my PC, yet keep myself relatively safe from
    viruses?
