Forgive me, but as far as I know NIS is "network information system", the name service for NFS.
NIS has meant that for maybe 15 years or so now.
That is what most people think of when they see the acronym NIS used in the computer world.
Obviously you mean something other than that. It would help if you gave us the name of the software, not an acronym.
