You can buy a Linksys Cable/ADSL router that has Network Address
Translation and SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) - the features you
want - for $50 bucks or so.

It doesn't disclose your IP address publicly (NAT) plus it blocks all
incoming packets that are not responding to a connection you made
from your machine (SPI).

Easy to set up and no software overhead.
