Digital certificates lost after reboot

Hi I'm using digital certificates in Internet Explorer under Windows XP. All
critical and recommended updates installed.

After rebooting the certificate I successfully install and use in my
Personal store disappears. It can be placed in other stores (and remains
after rebooting) but can't be used from there. I can re-import the key and
use it - it stays in place even if Internet Explorer is closed and
restarted. But it is gone after a reboot. Importing the key into another
machine doesn't replicate the problem, so it doesn't seem to be key
specific.

I'm at a loss to know how to proceed. Any advice would be welcome.
