anti-virus from network prospect

hi all;

are there ways to filter out viruses before they get to hundres of desktops on
an intranet? current solution is to install anti-virus software like symantic on
every desktop, which is labor intensive and difficult to manage. if i can have
anti-virus capability on the path of network coneections (intranet), then it
would be graet life saver for IT personnel ...
