Mike- I would use a BIOS password to lock your computer from booting the
programs mentioned would work as well but your information on your system
would already be at risk also U can write a script your self which will time
the number of tries it took for a person to logon to your computer before
the information was wiped from the harddrive which at least would leave your
personel data safe for the average user. Also U would still be able to
recover your data in the event that the computer was recovered.

: Hello all. I just had an unfortunate incident where my desktop
: computer was stolen. I'm replacing it but it got me thinking about
: methods for recovering a stolen computer. I am wondering if there is
: software that runs in the background of Windows (XP) that randomly
: pings or sends a packet to a pre-defined IP address. Then, if the
: computer is stolen and hooked up to the Internet again, you can then
: decipher the IP address where it is currently, alert the
: ISP/authorities, and hopefully recover your computer.
:
: I did some Googleing and came up with a few random sites like this:
:
: but I was wondering if there were an services priced/tailored toward
: an individual. Alternatively, do you know of any software that, while
: not specifically targeted toward computer recovery, could be used to
: do this task. For instance, I've seen ping software that helps
: prevent your ISP from changing your Dynamic IP address but none of
: them seem to run in the background (so the thief doesn't notice and
: disable it)
:
: Many thanks in advance.
