Hello all. I just had an unfortunate incident where my desktop
computer was stolen. I'm replacing it but it got me thinking about
methods for recovering a stolen computer. I am wondering if there is
software that runs in the background of Windows (XP) that randomly
pings or sends a packet to a pre-defined IP address. Then, if the
computer is stolen and hooked up to the Internet again, you can then
decipher the IP address where it is currently, alert the
ISP/authorities, and hopefully recover your computer.

I did some Googleing and came up with a few random sites like this:
    http://www.corporatesecurity.com/Content/contentct.asp?P=40

but I was wondering if there were an services priced/tailored toward
an individual. Alternatively, do you know of any software that, while
not specifically targeted toward computer recovery, could be used to
do this task. For instance, I've seen ping software that helps
prevent your ISP from changing your Dynamic IP address but none of
them seem to run in the background (so the thief doesn't notice and
    disable it)

    Many thanks in advance.

    Mike Smith
