Amy,

Whole bunch of questions here. (Inline, below) . . .

First, did you have an earlier version of NIS or NPF installed before you
installed NIS 2003? If so, did you remove the earlier version first?

Second. did you have a DIFFERENT software firewall installed prior to NIS
2003? If so, did you remove it before installing and enabling NIS 2003?

Third, what security level are you running under? High or Medium. (Ignore
Low; that effectively disables the firewall.)

Fourth, did you DISABLE Automatic Firewall Rule Creation for
Internet-enabled applications that NIS might recognize? If you did, then
you have to give explicit permission for NIS to create rules for these
applications before they will work (or you have to manually create the
necessary rules yourself).

Fifth, what events do you find in the NIS firewall event log when you are
unable to browse or get e-mail? You can copy and paste the details of those
events into a response message and that's likely to be more helpful than
anything else in determining the nature of your problem.

Sixth, I must acknowledge that if ICQ works, but not your browser or e-mail
client, there's a very high probability that Silver Cloud is correct and
that somehow your two installations have gotten messed up.

Seventh, I'm going to ASSUME that you have a perfectly legitimate copy of
NIS 2003. After Microsoft, Symantec's products are the most pirated (and
likely to be hacked in that instance) products on PCs. Furthermore,
Symantec has recently initiated its own program of Digital Rights Management
(DRM) and that means you can pretty much forget about using a copy of NIS or
NPF 2003 has been previously installed on another machine and registered
from that other machine.

Eighth, what's your Operating System? You don't say. NIS/NPF 2003 doesn't
work on Win 95 anymore. And, if you're running Win NT/2K/XP, you're
probably running with some form of User Accounts (both on the OS itself and
within the NIS firewall). In Win XP, it's possible to synchronize your OS
User Accounts with your firewall User Accounts; this isn't true in earlier
versions, where you have to manually ensure that your OS/firewall user
accounts are consistently defined.

I doubt that this is related to your current problem -- with one POSSIBLE
exception. There are a number of Trojans and even a few worms that will
actively attempt to DISABLE NIS/NPF 2003. If one is successful, the
firewall itself may drop into the BLOCK ALL INTERNET CONECTIONS mode. At
this point, we're talking about Trojans, worms, and bots that may be a bit
more esoteric than what NAV scans for. You'd need to run some anti-Trojan
utility (like Trojan Hunter from Magnus Mischel, The Cleaner from Moosoft,
or TDS-3 from DCS to ascertain if this is the source of your problem.

That appears to answer my fourth question above.

Are you using AOL, by any chance? Or a VPN?

Unless you've done something really weird during the Install, there should
definitely be some sort of related event logged in one of the event logs
when you try to surf. What's something weird? Well, putting the entire
Internet into the Restricted Zone is one of them! (The firewall Restricted
Zone is a complete and total block and is not at all the same thing as
putting something in the restricted zone in MSIE. Furthermore IP addresses
in the firewall's Restricted Zone are NOT logged in the event logs.)

Well, I'm sure it is. If you were using the previous version (NIS 2002),
you could use Albert Janssen's freeware NIS Settings and NIS Rules Viewer
utilities to get to the source of this problem very quickly, along with Sven
Schaefer's Log Viewer -- but none of these three tools works with NIS 2003.
As a consequence, it's quite difficult to quickly and effectively diagnose
end-users' problems with NIS/NPF 2003.

Still, give me some answer to the questions above and maybe we can figure
out where the problem is coming from.
