It's actually true. I had one of the certificates with a duplicate
serial number. Thawte reissued it today at no charge. The whole process
took about 30 minutes, but it did require phone contact with Thawte to
ensure the reissue was expeditied. It is somewhat inconvenient to go
through this under IIS 6, since a new CSR is required instead of a
renewal CSR.
Most people will probably want to stick with Thawte since they are a
root CA and not chained like InstantSSL.
But I agree, spamming a news group is bad.
