If I may, let me pitch my own site. See my sig. Follow the 8-step
plan. All 8.

The basic jist, if you don't want to visit, is: don't use Internet
Explorer or Outlook, run Ad-Aware 6, SpyBot, and SpywareBlaster (all
3) regularly, use the Proxomitron (also, set it up to filter SSL pages
as well as regular HTTP), use DNSKong/eDexter, and, finally, use some
sort of cookie management - most modern browsers can be set to reject
cookies upon exit, and if you feel like taking the time, configure a
cookie manager.

One thing I would add (haven't put it on the site yet), is to change
the name you registered Windows under to something generic, like
"Windows User" or "Computer User". If you alreday did this, great, but
if not (or you used something that could possibly single you out from
many other people) then do the following: on your desktop, right click
"My Computer" and select Properties. The box that comes up should show
your registration info. (Alternatively, you could go into Start, then
Settings, then Control Panel, then System, and look on the General
tab.)
Run REGEDIT and hit Control-F and do a search for your name (or
whatever you registered Windows under) and change it.

My (phony) name was under:
Look under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MS Setup (ACME)\User
Info
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{3075C5C3-0807-4924-AF8F-FF27052C12AE}
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\MS Setup (ACME)\User Info

On Win98SE systems. Bear in mind that, if anybody really wants to know
who you are (azs a matter of law enforcement), then there are many
other ways to find out. But those take time, cost money, and generally
require an active investigation.
