WLAN working also under Win2000 ?

As far as I know WinXP has built-in features for WLAN whereas Win2000 needs additional installations.
Is this correct? What do I have to install?
Is it possible to connect a Win2000 desktop with a WinXP Home Laptop in Ad-hoc WLAN mode?
