Taking a moment's reflection, Leythos mused:

| We get calls about once a
| month with someone saying they were hacked, but since they were on dial-
| up they thought they were safe :)
How many of those people were actually hacked, though? I don't know how
many corrupt files, HD crashes, weird system quirks, etc. I have seen blamed
on a virus simply because the end user doesn't know anything about
computers. Of course, they simply assume it is a virus, since a virus is
their best possible culprit. Seems "I must have been hacked" has replaced
"I must have had a virus."
By example, I got a call the other day. The client thought their
machine had been hacked because they saw one of those MS Messenger spam ads
popup on their desktop. Another shut down their system because, while
browsing, a window popped up saying their computer "had been hacked" ... of
course, it was a popup ad selling internet security.
A fully patched, and properly configured, OS is still the best security.
I've been on broadband for 6 years, and have never seen a serious attempt to
gain access to my computer that would have been successful even without a
firewall.
