In promiscuous mode, your ethernet card will let through all traffic on
the net, including traffic not directed to the MAC address of the
machine itself. Ie, in this mode, all traffic gets read by the ethernet
card and is available for perusal by the system on that computer. Under
non-promiscuous mode, only those packets actually addressed to that
particular ethernet card are saved by the hardware on the card and
passed on to the system.
Most operating systems only allow root or administrator to change a card
into promiscuous mode. Of course with OS which have no such concept as
root, (DOS, Win 9x,...) anyone can put the card into promiscouos mode.
This means that that computer can read all traffic on that branch of the
network.
