No, there are residual fields left and data can be recovered with special
techniques. The best wipe involves seven overwrites with 1's, 0's, and
random patterns. Even then it is said that it is possible to recover data.
There are two best defenses. First, melt the drive into slag. The second
is have proof that you bought the drive used. That way they cannot prove
you were the original owner of the recovered data. (Works in the U.S.
because of reasonable doubt provisions.)
