You know, it's really very amusing when people lose sight of the original
posting and then engage in pointless diatribe about things which are usually
totally unrelated to reality.

For what it's worth, the original poster was not seeing icmp pings, but rather
PPP LCP echo requests, which are quite normal on a PPP connection, and should be
expected. In no way do they present any security risk to anyone.

It would be nice if the flamers could remove their flamage to a more appropriate
forum, such as alt.flame, or more appropriately, alt.weeners.
