Matthew,
Just a stand-alone WfW 3.11 PC or others, also?
If you've got others (on an internal LAN, for example) use one of the
others as the primary gateway to the Internet (i.e., use a Hub, these are
now quite cheap). Yes, I've seen the postings that WfW PCs are inherently
insecure, but I've never heard of an exploit currently available. I ran
one up through Oct '98 with no problems. After that, it ended up on a LAN
behind a Win 98 SE gateway (running Microsoft's ICS and also a PSF).
At this point (after all this time), your primary problem may well be
finding A/V and A/T software that will run on Win 3x. (The good news is
that there seems to be very few exploits known and operative these days.)
At any rate, find and use whatever you can (just to be sure). Time to hit
the swap meets and used computer exchanges for this, I daresay.
There's very little in the way of definitive information on what OSs are
currently connected to the Internet. However, if you check
http://www.thecounter.com/stats/2002/July/os.php for July 2002, it's
rather obvious that less than 1% of the hits being registered from The
Counter are due to Win 3x boxes. In other words, there's very little
reason for a virus/trojan/worm to target a Win 3x machine (and the
possibility that it could then proliferate is even less). As for specific
applications and application vulnerabilities -- well, at this point you're
going to have to handle them on a case-by-case basis. This becomes
something of a "catch as catch can" situation, however, inasmuch as many
security patches for Win 3x system applications are now extremely hard to
find.
I might be able to point you to a few USENET newsgroups of interest, but
I'm not sure as to how active these may still be.
