How to effectively secure a network?

In class we are working on securing a system with 900 computers and
various types of OS (Microsoft 95,98,2000) Running servers with
Windows and Linux OS. We are looking for suggestions on good types of
hardware, software and people issues that others currently use for
their system. Please contact us.
