It's not short for "authentication", it's short for
"identification and authentication".

I certainly never took it seriously. More like one
of those endearing non-words children make up. If
y'all want to go on a quest to expundge it from the
language before it takes root I'm not standing in
your way. Just thought I'd explain the origins.

You all do know the difference between identification
and authentication, I assume.
